Fort Myers, FL – February 3, 2017…As an oncologist for over 30 years, I feel privileged to be able to care for cancer patients. I think about cancer every day and I want to help reduce the burden of cancer in the state of Florida and beyond.

That is also the idea behind World Cancer Day, held annually on February 4. Established at the World Summit on Cancer, held in Paris in 2000, this initiative challenges us, individually and collectively, to think about what actions we can take to lessen the impact cancer has on individuals, families and communities the world over.

Physicians, researchers, nurses and many other clinicians are consistently helping educate the public and encouraging healthier schools, work places and cities. We know that if people make healthier lifestyle choices, such as not smoking, we can reduce the incidence of cancer and even prevent it, in many cases. For those who are afflicted, we must improve access to high quality, valued-based cancer care. I am very proud that Florida Cancer Specialists was among a select group of practices across the nation chosen to participate in the Oncology Care Model, an innovative new care delivery model that supports and encourages higher quality, more coordinated cancer care for patients undergoing chemotherapy.

As individuals, we can also help decrease the impact of cancer by making healthy lifestyle choices, getting recommended screenings and understanding that early detection saves lives. I encourage you to join me on February 4, as we recognize World Cancer Day. By working together and taking action, we can hasten the end of cancer, as we know it.
