Fort Myers, FL – March 8, 2017. . .Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS), the leading community oncology/hematology practice in the state, has one of the most advanced pathology laboratories in the state focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.  Located in Fort Myers, FL, the lab serves the entire statewide practice and processes over 50,000 samples each year.  Integration through the FCS Electronic Medical Record (OncoEMR) enables enhanced communication and consultation between the pathologists and FCS physicians, resulting in much quicker turnaround time than with a traditional outside lab, consequently allowing patients to begin treatment sooner.

The practice recently added three new pathologists to its in-house laboratory staff. Surgical Pathologists Dr. Jane Bernstein and Dr. Kelly Rose and Hematopathologist Dr. Jane McNaughton joined the team of highly specialized laboratory scientists and hematopathologists in the state-of-the-art facility. The new surgical pathologists will enable the laboratory to evaluate a wider variety of tissue samples, specifically solid tumor specimens, thus increasing efficiency for both patients and the medical oncologists of Florida Cancer Specialists.

Brad Prechtl, CEO of FCS, said, “Because we treat cancer patients, we want to minimize the time it takes to get lab results back to our doctors. Our in-house pathology lab serves our entire statewide network, providing critical information to our physicians, usually within 24-hours.  The addition of these three excellent pathologists will enhance our ability to serve patients in the most time-efficient manner, no matter where they live in Florida.”

Dr. William Harwin, Founder and President of FCS, said, “These three physicians have completed their training at some of the finest medical facilities in the nation. After graduating with honors from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, Dr. Bernstein did her pathology training at Yale. Dr. McNaughton completed a Transfusion Medicine Fellowship at Stanford University. And, Dr. Rose completed her residency and fellowship at Emory University. We are excited to be able to welcome these outstanding physicians to our network.”

Dr. Ryan Olson, FCS Hematopathologist, added, “Expanding our pathology team allows us to serve a larger scope of patients. The addition of surgical pathologists will enhance the services we provide to FCS patients, enabling us to process a greater variety of biopsies such as breast, lung, prostate, gastrointestinal and skin. While our hematopathologists deal exclusively with blood, bone marrow and lymph nodes, our surgical pathologists study solid tumor malignancies from throughout the body.”

After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Yale University in New Haven, CT, Dr. Jane Bernstein completed her Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology Residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT, where she also served as Chief Resident in the program. Following her residency, Dr. Bernstein remained at Yale-New Haven Hospital for her Fellowship in Cytopathology. Dr. Bernstein has been an active participant in numerous multidisciplinary tumor boards and has been published in several peer-reviewed journals.

As a resident at Orlando Health, Dr. Janet McNaughton received the Florida Society of Pathologists Resident Research Award and subsequently completed a Transfusion Medicine Fellowship at Stanford University in Stanford, CA,  a Hematopathology Fellowship at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA. And, in 2015, she returned to Florida for fellowship training in Cytopathology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa, FL. Prior to joining Florida Cancer Specialists in 2017, Dr. McNaughton practiced at Professional Pathology Services in Columbia, SC.

Dr. Kelly Rose completed residencies in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the Medical University of South Carolina School of Medicine and Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. She remained at Emory for her fellowship in Forensic Pathology, before returning to South Carolina, where she served as a surgical, clinical and autopsy pathologist with Newberry Pathology Associates. In 2013, Dr. Rose relocated to Florida and joined Collier Pathology Services, PA and practiced at Physicians Regional Healthcare Systems Hospitals in Naples, FL.
