Washington, D.C. – May 1, 2017……… The 2017 Community Oncology Conference, which was convened April 27 – 28, 2017 in Washington, D.C., drew over 1300 oncologists, administrators, nurses, pharmacists, industry leaders and patient advocates to the nation’s capital to discuss some of the most recent advancements in cancer care today.  Hosted by the Community Oncology Alliance (COA), this year’s conference featured numerous physicians and leaders from Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS), including Dr. Michael Diaz, Dr. Craig Reynolds, FCS Founder and President Dr. William Harwin, Dr. Lucio Gordan, who served as a national co-chair for the conference, FCS Director of Pharmacy Ray Bailey and FCS CEO Brad Prechtl.  Sitting on panels post conference were Don Champlain, Associate Director of Care Management and Sarah Cevallos, Chief Revenue Cycle Officer.

FCS CEO Brad Prechtl, who participated in a panel discussion on the Practice Vision for the Now & Future of Community Oncology, said, “As one of the practices selected to participate in the Oncology Care Model, FCS has been at the cutting-edge of developing new strategies, as we transition to a value-based care model.  Sharing experiences with other community oncologists and administrators strengthens our ability to deliver innovative new therapies and services to our patients.”

Dr. William Harwin, Founder and President of FCS, addressed the conference during a panel discussion on How Community Oncology Is Fueling the Cancer Moonshot.  “Our capacity to share big data and information from clinical research is greatly improving our understanding of cancer and our ability to treat it,” said Dr. Harwin. “This data is guiding physicians in tailoring and personalizing treatment strategies to each patient’s unique genetic makeup for maximum effectiveness.”

Conference co-chair Dr. Lucio Gordan, who practices at the Gainesville Cancer Center, added, “Community oncology practices have truly taken the lead in delivering cutting-edge treatments, driving clinical research and developing innovative payment and delivery system reforms. As front-line providers of cancer care, community oncology practices understand the challenges of our current cancer care system and are dedicated to improving treatments and providing cost-effective, patient-centric solutions.”
