FLASCO donated $20,000 to provide 4 scholarships for University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine First Year Students a Summer Research Fellowship in Cancer Research at Mayo Clinic Cancer Center Jacksonville, Fl in Summer 2018.

This program, originally funded by the NIH CCATS grant, consists of a week long course on research given by faculty from the UPR SoM and Mayo Clinic Jacksonville to the entire first year class of UPR SoM students. At the end of this week-long course, the students are divided in 9 small groups with a facilitator and each group designs a research project that they present on the last day of the course.

The students then apply to an 8 weeks summer research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville during the summer between their first and second year. A total of 8 students out of 70 students applying are selected for this fellowship by the faculty of the UPR SoM.

In addition, students who graduate from the summer fellowship program are able to apply for a year-long Masters in Translational Research at the Mayo Clinic between their second and third year of medical school. Finally, some of the students go on and pursue a PhD degree at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville and then go back to UPR to complete their MD degree. This highly successful program has trained hundreds of students and their graduates are now in academic positions in PR and USA.

Thank you to Dr. Gerardo Colon-Otero for coordinating and presenting this exciting opportunity for FLASCO to participate in!
