Cigna – JW Modifier Start Date Update

FLASCO recently contacted Cigna on behalf of our 2,000 plus members requesting that Cigna reconsider the start date for the JW Modifier.

It was pointed out to Cigna that Medicare had pushed the implementation back to 1/1/17. This will allow practices to ensure appropriate IT resources are in place to report the waste appropriately. At this point, Cigna is the only payer requiring the –JW modifier in FL prior to 1/1/17 and it would be a manual edit for all Cigna claims with a SDV.

Our main contact for Cigna replied as follows: “This request has been escalated internally within Cigna but I have confirmed at this time, Cigna is still proceeding with the 10/3/2016 effective for the JW modifier to be affixed to the claim for drug waste reimbursement to be considered. If anything changes I will be sure to let you know.”
