Recap of the 2006 Florida Legislative Session Relating to Cancer Issues

The top ACS priority, HB 1027 by Rep. Adam Hasner (R-Delray Beach) and Marti Coley (R-Marianna), was sent to
the Governor on Day 59 (of 60). The measure creates the Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program and is funded at $36 million
over four years. In 2010, the Legislature will review the program and it will have an opportunity for additional continuation
funding. (This is the Bill that may assist the FLASCO Clinical Trials Network)
HB 1449 was also sent to the Governor on Thursday. It establishes the Florida Center for Brain Tumor Research at the
University of Florida. The budget adopted Friday evening includes $500,000 for this initiative.
The FY 2006-07 budget fully funds the Mary Brogan Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection and Treatment Program for
another year.
The FY 2006-07 budget also includes full continuation funding for the Closing the Gap Minority Health Initiative .
Moffitt Cancer Center got an appropriation of $18.4 million for services to low income individuals...$5 million of this
allocation may be used for Moffitt's Total Cancer Care initiative.
From a general revenue appropriation to the University of Miami....$6 million was allocated to the Sylvester Cancer Center
and another $1.9 million was earmarked for cancer research.
The Cancer Control and Research Advisory Council was appropriated $75,000 to develop statewide cervical cancer priorities.
A teen breast health initiative in Duval County was allocated $43,000.
